John Sedgwick – Creative Photographer and Photography Workshop Leader
“Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people.”– Leo Burnett
“A picture is a poem without words.” Anyone who has seen John Sedgwick’s photography is bound to agree with this quote by Horace, an ancient Roman poet.
John Sedgwick’s passion for photography began back in 1965 as an undergrad at the University of Cincinnati, where he served as the university’s newspaper and year book photo editor. John’s love for photography was reignited when he moved to the Pacific Northwest, and began capturing the beautiful surroundings on film.
Teaching has also always been a personal passion for John. In his photography workshops and one- on-one teaching sessions, he coaches people through the process of discovering their creative strengths and then brings those strengths to light through the photographic process. From Mi Casita by John Sedgwickcomposing and taking the original photograph through digital processing, printing, matting, framing and preparing a print for exhibition, John coaches his workshop participants to achieve creative success.
When asked about his hobby, he responds, “I photograph light. Our world overflows with artistic inspiration created by the characteristics of light that illuminate our world.” John’s inspiration changes with his mood or location and what light presents to him. He often finds that his best images find him; waiting for him to respond to the dancing light, inviting him in to explore and create.
John is drawn to diverse subject matter including moody skies, sacred trees, industrial landscapes, delicate blooms, natural landscapes and the marvelous display of abstract pattern and form often found in the details of a scene. This may be the colorful prow of a wooden boat, the sensuality of a rose petal, brilliant Latin color or an edgy abstract etched in rusty steel. Most of all he photographs how light, natures extraordinary paintbrush, plays out on the palette of life.
John’s fine art photographs have been featured in many regional galleries and exhibitions including Whatcom Museum Exhibitions, the Depot Arts Gallery in Anacortes, WA, Skagit Valley Medical Center exhibitions and are included in numerous private and corporate collections.
His work is available for review and purchase through his website, regional galleries and national publishers.
Phil and Melanie Multop enjoy John’s photography so much that they have “Morning’s Work” displayed in the office, and a few additional pieces displayed in their home. Stop by Multop Financial anytime to see the beautiful photograph “Morning’s Work” first hand!
